If the puck drops on the ice, why shouldn't they be allowed to play it?

The net behind the goal, if a puck deflects off the net or it's just hit off the net and falls on the ice, why shouldn't they be allowed to play it?? I know the nets there to protect fans, but I don't see why it shouldn't be played if it lands on the ice...
