Can horses wear trail boots if they have shoes?

I am going to do competitive trail with my horse...bearing in mind that some of the terrain is going to be rather rocky, I want to get him a set of hoof boots for those trail rides...but he is shod on all 4 hooves though...will hoof boots work if he is shod too?
