Is Amstel Park in Amsterdam near the city centre?

I'm going to Amsterdam for a holiday, and I'm looking to book a place to stay. I want something that would put me near the city centre. Is Amstel Park close, and can you give a small list of any other monuments/parks/museums that I can use as a reference on the map. Thanks
