Mp4 on Windows Media Player?

Why does Windows media player 11 installed on my system cannot play mp4 files ? Moreover Same WMP Installed on my Laptop with same Windows XP plays the same file easily. Same is the case with avi files. I am not able to view the video in avi files on my desktop( I can hear sound), but can see the same on my laptop while using WMP.
